Product & Market Fundamentals

Phosphorus: Phosphate is an essential nutrient and a building block of life. It is one of the three main nutrients required for agriculture sustainable production

Highly reactive phosphate rock: suitable to be used as a fertilizer for direct application for both traditional and organic agriculture. Bahia Inglesa’s phosphate rock is internationally recognized as a highly reactive source of P.

CO2 Footprint reduction: the use of phosphate rock as a fertilizer in agriculture reduces up to 80% the CO2 footprint compared against other soluble phosphate fertilizers

Phosphate rock P2O5 beneficiation project to reach plus 30% plus. Meets spec requirements as raw material for industrial use.

Phosphate Rock Demand: set to grow over the next 50 year in the South American “food basin”.

Strong pricing: historically high phosphate rock prices (offer restrictions)

New Phosphate rock demand for LFP Batteries: Lithium, Iron, Phosphate batteries market is to have a strong growth in the future

Location and Infrastructure

Chile is a stable western democratic country with a long term outlook of stability. Chile’s mining law is based on Western Australian mining tenement law.

Pan American Highway is located close to mining tenements and production facilities.

Caldera Port located 8 Km from plant: safe, deep water port with infrastructure to operate Handy and HandyMax Size vessels provides access to main destination markets

Copiapo Airport is located close to mining tenements and production facilities.

There are many mining companies operating in the area, which brings many services suppliers and skilled labor available for Bifox project.

Public services available to the plant: Power and water.

Project Key Fundamentals

Bifox’s highly reactive phosphate rock is a natural source of phosphorus for plant nutrition with a p2o5 content of 19% and that could be used as a fertilizer for direct application and is also suitable for organic agriculture.

Phosphorus (P) alongside Nitrogen and Potassium are the three primary macronutrients essential to successful plant growth .

Without Phosphorus, photosynthesis could not occur. Phosphorus plays a key role in complex energy transformations that are necessary to all life, as a main ingredient in ATP (adenosine triphosphate). It is also a central component of DNA and RNA – and is necessary for building proteins and other compounds.

Phosphate rock is also the main raw material used to  produce phosphoric acid and all the soluble phosphate fertilizers. These uses require a phosphate rock with a p2o5 content of 28% or more. Bifox is analyzing different standard technologies to beneficiate p205 content of the phosphate rock and reach the technical specification required for industrial use. This will expand the  potential markets for Bifox´s production.

Phosphate rock deposits are a scarce and non-renewable resource that are available in only a few countries worldwide.

Bifox has secured access to a shallow ancient cretaceous period seabed phosphate rock deposit in the Atacama desert measured by the Chilean government at 87 million tonnes, traditionally surface mined (truck and front end loader) and supplied at mine gate over the past 20 years.

Bifox has a set of different  tenements:

  • Selaqueos (BI): 6,090 ha mining exploitation tenements.
  • Kiwanda (KI): 16,043 ha of exploration tenements.

New concessions: Bahía Salada (BS) comprising around 3.500 ha, Gaviota (GA) comprising 100 ha and Olivia (OL) comprising 2.800 ha.

The phosphate rock deposit bed is very shallow and is located between 2,0 and 4,0 m from the surface. This allows a simple and low cost mining operation that is made in open pit linear trenches.

Operation equipment are mainly backhoes and frontloaders to remove sand cover, extract phosphate rock and load it into trucks. There is no need for blasting operations to extract phosphate rock ore. After ore extraction trenches are backfilled using the original sand material.

From the mine, the product is transported to the production site.

Bifox has upgraded the phosphate rock production plant located at Caldera. This plant has a production capacity of 60 ktpy of phosphate rock. The final product is a very fine powder (95% passes mesh 100). This granulometry is fundamental to enhance plant phosphorus availability when the phosphate rock is applied into the soil. Labor with mining and ore processing skills and experience available from Copiapo 77 km from site and from Caldera 10 km from site.

With this phosphate rock production capacity we will supply not only all the requirements of the Chilean market, but also export availability to start developing the regional markets in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Central America.

The Atacama region has great connectivity to both the domestic and international markets.

The port of Caldera is located 10 km from the production plant. It currently handles different commodities for both the domestic and export markets, in vessels up to handymax size with capacity up to 40,000t. The concrete berth is 113 meters long, allows access with full load trucks up to the side of the vessel and can receive vessels up to 220 m long. Access to vessel transportation is key to supply the international fertilizer markets.

Road connectivity from the plant to the port, the neighboring cities and the main highways running Chile from north to south is excellent, with the Pan American Highway adjacent to the mining site.

Access to the Atacama Region is completed with a modern airport, located 20 km from the production facility.

The plant is located close to Caldera City which grants access to power and water supply from the city.
